Properties located in the City of Boulder with wood roof coverings containing 50+% wood by volume must be replace before January 1, 2014.

There was a time when wood shakes and shingles were one of the few roofing materials available to the consumer.  Today, there are a number of roofing products from which the homeowner, builder, and architect can choose. These natural products can be composed of cedar, redwood, southern pine, and other woods.  Many wood shingles and shakes only have Class C fire ratings or no ratings at all. According the the UL (Underwriters Laboratories Inc), Class C roof coverings offer a “light degree” of fire protection as opposed to Class A or Class B, which offer a “high degree” and a “moderate degree” of roof protection, respectively. Wood shakes and shingles were frequently selected because of their aesthetic appeal and good insulation properties.  Although the advantages are noteworthy, wood shake and shingle roofs possess a highly undesirable characteristic:

WOOD SHAKE AND SHINGLE ROOFS INCREASE THE RISK OF STRUCTURE LOSS DUE TO WILDFIRE.

The risk has been considered so great that their use has been banned in the City of Boulder.

A house can be threatened by wildfire in three ways: direct exposure to flames, radiated heat, and airborne firebrands. Of these, firebrands account for the majority of homes burned due to wildfire. Firebrands are burning embers produced by fire which are lifted into the air by a convection column and carried beyond the fire front. Typical firebrand materials include pine cones, bark, and, if houses are burning, shakes and shingles. Depending on wind speed and size of material, firebrands can be transported and deposited up to 1/2 mile (or further in extreme cases) ahead of the fire. A shower of thousands of firebrands can be produced during a major wildfire. If these firebrands land in receptive fuel beds, numerous spot fires will be produced. Even homes located blocks away from the main fire can be threatened. The most vulnerable part of a house to firebrands is the roof. Because of its angle, the roof can catch and trap firebrands. If the roof is constructed of combustible materials such as untreated wood shakes and shingles, the house is in jeopardy of igniting and burning.

Chapter 10-5: Building Code

10-5-5 Wood Roof Covering Materials Prohibited.

(a) No person shall install or cause to be installed any wood roof covering materials, including, without limitation, wood shakes or wood shingles. This prohibition includes wood roof covering materials with fire retardant treatments of any kind.

(b) It shall be a specific defense to a charge of violation of subsection (a) of this section that the wood roof covering materials were installed before January 1, 2014, to repair portions of an existing wood roof, that the repair wood roof covering materials were factory pressure treated so as to be fire retardant and are approved as meeting Class B standards in accordance with section 1501.1 of the building code, and that the wood roof covering materials were installed in a quantity not exceeding fifty percent of the roof surface in any three-hundred-sixty-five-day period.

(c) No person owning a building with wood roof covering materials shall fail to remove or cause to be removed from the building all wood roof covering materials before January 1, 2014, and to replace the removed roofing with approved roof covering materials which conform to the International Building Code as adopted, and no person shall thereafter take possession or ownership of a building with wood roof covering materials.

(d) The following additional definition applies to this section and to chapter 15 of the building code:

“Wood roof covering material” means an exterior surface material used as a top covering and made of wood. “Wood,” for the purposes of this definition, means any natural or composite material containing at least fifty percent wood by volume.

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – The Grace Baptist Church in Commerce City didn’t have much to begin with. Most of the congregation is made up of the elderly, the poor and people living on a fixed income.

So losing over $8,500 to a roofing scam is hitting the church where it hurts.

“It hurt us just to think anyone could stoop that low,” Pastor Dave Browning said.

Pastor Browning was approached by a door to door roofing salesman in May, right after a major hail storm hit the area and damaged the church and dozens of homes.

He says the salesperson convinced him that the American Shingle company was a nationwide company with a good reputation.

Browning signed over an $8,500 insurance check to American Shingle and the company assured him the work would start within a few weeks. But the company kept pushing back the start date.

By August, Browning was getting suspicious, and that’s when American Shingle stopped returning his phone calls.

“I called and I always got a busy signal, I sent emails and they were returned. I feel like if they are willing to do this to a church then they’ll do this to anyone,” he said.

FOX31 News has learned Grace Baptist Church isn’t the only victim.

The Better Business Bureau says it has received more than 4,000 complaints about American Shingle from consumers across the country. American Shingle recently closed all of their locations in 11 states –including Colorado.

The company is under investigation in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina and Colorado.

We tried to contact American Shingle CEO, Dewayne Dunko. But the phones were disconnected.

Dunko reportedly told CNN, his company “got into financial trouble” and they “took the money collected from new customers” to pack back debt.

Now the Grace Baptist Church is left high dry with a roof that won’t last through the winter. Still, the pastor says, “we will just keep praying and trusting the Lord and we know eventually something will come through for us.”

Woodruf™ roof shingles, a fiberboard roofing product, were a Masonite™ roofing product consisting of “pressure bonded fibers designed to resemble natural cedar roofing” sold in the United States into the 1990′s and have also been found installed on homes in Canada.

Masonite Woodruf shingles were the subject of a class action lawsuit and settlement concerning the durability of this roofing product – we discuss the Woodruf roofing class action settlement below. However the Woodruf shingle claims period expired on January 6, 2009.

The roofing shingle product was produced in four-foot sections that were 12″ wide and with a nominal thickness of 7/16″. The actual thickness varies due to raised ridges that give Woodruf shingles the appearance of a wood shake or shingle.

Our sources indicate that Woodruf shingles were marketed with a 40 year life expectancy. As of this artcle’s last update (July 2010) there is no warranty service remaining on this roofing product.

The Woodruf™ shingle fiberboard was treated with a water repellant and a bonding agent to permit outdoor exposure. This product is softer than Masonite’s hardboard products and to remain durable required an installation that permitted good roof drying (similar to the requirement for wood shingles or shakes). This is particularly true because the factory edges as well as any cut edges made during installation were not sealed.

Masonite Woodruf roofing was intended for steep slope roofs and should not be installed on slopes lower than 4″ of rise in 12″ of run (a 4/12 roof). The shingles were to be installed over roofing felt on a sound roof deck, with a 9″ shingle exposure and requiring eight nails per roofing panel.

With all the hailstorms that have passed through Colorado and other service areas of Infinity Roofing, we recommend you to get this type of material inspected right away!  If there are any signs of damage or repairs needed, your insurance company has no choice but to pay for a replacement cost value on the Woodruf Masonite Shingles.

Masonite Woodruf Shingle Class Action Lawsuit Settlement Information for Homeowners

If you qualify as an Eligible Claimant, you may be entitled to recover under the Settlement. However the claims period expired on January 6, 2009.

To be an Eligible Claimant, you must:

1. Own property in the United States or its Territories on which Woodruf roofing has been incorporated and installed since January 1, 1980, and have not assigned the claim regarding the alleged damage caused by Woodruf;
2. Be a subsequent purchaser of such property and have properly documented assignments determined to be valid under the Settlement; or
3. Own or have formerly owned such property and have made Prior Un-Reimbursed Expenditures as defined by the Settlement.

Eligible Claimants do not include persons, associations or entities who made claims or filed lawsuits against Defendants other than in the Smith class action, if they were represented by counsel other than Plaintiffs’ Class Counsel in the Smith class action, and their claims or lawsuits were resolved by payment based upon the entire square footage of Masonite Woodruf roofing on the structure, full release or judicial action

The Woodruf shingle claims period expired on January 6, 2009.

Mother Nature had her own fireworks on display across Colorado on Sunday as severe storms hit areas around Denver and southeast of Denver near Kiowa, CO during the late evening hours.

In the video shot (below) by BNVN Weather Paparazzi Tony Laubach, along CO-86 in and around Kiowa, Colorado, baseball size hail was falling as several vehicles were stopped on the side of the road waiting for the storm to pass.

He shot dramatic footage of baseball size hail bouncing hard and high off the ground.   The hail falling was a mix of Golf Ball and Baseball sized hail.   The video then moves to several damaged windshields, including storm chaser vehicle from inside. Golf ball sized hail was collected and put against several damaged windshields to give a perspective of the damage.  There is a point of view shot as chasers approach Kiowa, CO with water tower in the background and half a foot of hail on the highway. Various shots of hail accumulating in town. Also includes shots of a store keeper brushing accumulating hail from his porch and post-storm hail on the ground and fog created by the hail cooling the air.  To see entire video, click here

On Wednesday afternoon in Commerce City, Colorado a freakish hailstorm hit a suburb of Denver dropping a blizzard of ice on the town of Commerce City.  After the storm, people came out of their homes, and cars to survey the damage.

Cars and homes were beat up by the freak hail storm which delivered six to twelve inches of hail in some areas of Colorado.  Windshields were smashed.  Windows were crushed.
